The St. Ambrose Women’s Volleyball program had a full and exciting third week of October. On Tuesday, October 19th, the lady bees kicked off the week with a home game against their conference rivals Olivet Nazarene as the first of four home games in that week. The Bees battled for four sets and ONU took the victory at the end of the night.
On Wednesday, the Bees hosted their JV senior night where four seniors were honored during this match. They were showered in gifts and support from their fans and played a great game. John Wood Community College took the win.
On Thursday, teammates and parents put in the work to pull off the first Volley for the Cure fundraiser at St. Ambrose. Raffle prizes and a bake sale were set up at the entrance of LeeLohman arena. Pink ribbons and balloons decorated the arena and the bees wore pink warm up shirts and ribbons to show their extra support.
Before the game started, junior Jenna Saad kicked off the event with a tribute to anyone who has battled cancer in the past or was currently battling cancer. The team honored 21 individuals who have impacted their lives personally and delivered pink carnations to anyone present in the stands.
The event’s theme was centered around breast cancer because it is the most common form of cancer and has affected a great number of the players, but the event intended to honor anyone who has battled cancer. The support of their fans raised over $350 to donate to the American Cancer Society in order to provide financial assistance to those fighting cancer.
The team rallied against St. Francis University to win in 5 sets which echoed the message of the night, “never give up.” The team is very thankful to their supporters for helping them honor those who have fought cancer.
The varsity team came out to battle one last time that week on Saturday, October 23rd for their senior night against Clarke University. Six seniors were honored. Each of the seniors was showered in gifts from their family, friends, coaches and teammates to thank them for their commitment to the program. SAU battled with Clarke for five sets but didn’t take the win.
The volleyball program is very thankful to their supporters and especially those who could attend the exciting events from that week. They are looking forward to battling out the last few weeks of the season and place in conference playoffs.
