To kick off the new school year, there have been a lot of changes around campus, one of which is the post office. Many students say they are upset with the new operation of the mailroom, while others say the new style is more beneficial than the old. Students shared their opinions on the new mailroom and what it brings to the campus.

The new mailroom now features a comprehensive computerized system called “Slingshot.”

The mailroom is now also combined with the university’s bookstore, allowing students to collect both their mail and books in one location.

According to Scott Morter, guest store manager, “The goal of the new operation is to make it easier and less pricy for students to receive their books and supplies.” Scott also mentioned that the new way makes it easier for the school to maintain and operate.

Even with the new system, some students who use it often say they are not happy with it. They say they are upset with the limitations of the mailroom hours, which limit when people can get their mail.

“I am not a huge fan of it,” said senior human performance major Cole Kemper. “It really limits my schedule as I now have to go during the mailroom hours.” The mailroom is open from 8 am to 4:30 pm, which could cause challenges for students who have tough schedules with classes and athletics.

Other students say they are confused about why the mailroom changed in the first place. Grad student Deven Williams says, “I don’t know why they switched the way they did it. I never had any problems in my three years here.”

Despite the negative reactions, others say they can see the benefits. Students note some of the positives are about the new organization and the helpful email notifications. “The new structure is really organized and makes it really easy for me,” says senior exercise science major David Tessman. “The old lockers last year were confusing and inefficient when getting mail.”

Senior Brennan Wilson also mentioned, “It’s decent, I like that I don’t have to do much when looking for what books I need. I also enjoy the emails that let me know when I get mail.”

The new on-campus mailroom has certainly stirred mixed reactions, with some students frustrated by its limited hours and changes from the old system, while others welcome the streamlined notifications and organized structure. Whether seen as a step forward in efficiency or an inconvenience to daily routines, the remodel reflects St. Ambrose’s effort to modernize campus services.
