On Tuesday, the SAU Super Smash Bro’s Esports team faced off against their rivals from across the river, the Augustana Vikings, ahead of their annual Battle for the River.
It was a best of three, king of the hill style match for our Fighting Bees Tuesday night as they faced their cross town rival the Augustana Vikings. Aaron Smock, a senior at St. Ambrose who plays for the Bees had this to say regarding the match. “We definitely gotta keep our guard, but at the same time it’s a fun match and we always enjoy competing with them.”
Junior captain Grant Ward doubled down on the feeling toward the Vikings, saying “I really wanna beat them personally, they’re obviously playing back there, and I want them to know that I want to beat them!”
The Bees started strong, with Jospeh Foley in round one capturing early points for the team, followed by junior captain Grant Ward, who extended the lead by defeating Augies fighter with only one life left.
First year Kade Mckillip and senior Aaron Smock stepped in as the closers for the team to finish off the round, giving SAU the lead 1-0.
The Vikings came out swinging in round two, with Folley falling early, and giving Augustana a quick lead. Grant Ward quickly turned the tides however, bringing the Vikings down to their last fighter and continuing the Bee’s lead.
Smock soon stepped up again to secure the win for SAU, 2-0. After the match, captain Grant Ward reflected on the game saying,
“I feel great, we were able to pull out the win, and we are able to go ahead and see each player, go ahead and look at their overall skill level throughout the match, and go from there. Me personally, I’m happy with how I played overall, and I feel like everyone on the Ambrose team who played today would probably say the same thing.”
This improves the team’s overall record to 3-2, and continues to add to their high expectations for the rest of the season, as reflected by freshman Kade Mckillip.
“It’s just a fun time. Not only is it competitive, but it’s fun and competitive, and that’s what I like.”
