Esports Honeypot

Honeypot 7: Fireside Tales took place at the TBK Bank Sports Complex from Friday, September 19th, through Sunday, September 21st.

Albert Rassavong, Assistant Director of Esports at Buena Vista University and Head Organizer for Honeypot, said he feels the tournament went well, “…especially with the new space…

“It’s been two years since we ran it, and being able to see all those people in a venue and…seeing the venue as a whole layout without it being segmented like how it was at the Putnam Museum, it just feels great.”

The tournament attracted attention from returning spectators, such as SAU Junior Corey McAleer. “This is my second Honeypot I’ve been to…

“From a spectator standpoint, the new venue gives a lot more room.”

Connor Culbertson, an SAU Freshman, attended Honeypot for the first time as part of the St. Ambrose University Esports program. He states that, “It was a great time!

“I got to meet a lot of cool people…including meeting one of my favorite smash players, Atata.”

Collegiate Super Smash Bros. teams joined in on the action, including the SAU Esports Smash team. They could be seen as the Scooby Doo Mystery Gang rather than in their usual uniforms.

Planning for the next Honeypot has already begun. Rassavong states that, “For the next Honeypot, I would hope that it continues to grow bigger and, you know, more people come out…

“I mean it’s a great event!”

McAleer believes that, “…if it keeps getting better, than it’s great news for me, it’s great news for Davenport, and it’s great news for everyone here…”

Rassavong says “For anyone who didn’t come to Honeypot, please come check it out…

“If you like gaming and you like hype moments and great people…come support us and watch these games.”

The date for the next Honeypot is currently unannounced. It is expected to be in the Fall of 2026.
