Homecoming Week is here, and excitement is in the air as St. Ambrose University welcomes back alumni and kicks off one of the most spirited weeks of the year. Between long-standing traditions, new campus touches, and a full lineup of events, students are calling it what it feels like — the best week of the year.

Things started off Monday with donuts in the Beehive and a chance to meet President Novak. Students also got to make custom wire signs — a fun, creative way to show their Ambrosian pride.

On Tuesday, students headed to the Rogalski Center for Casino Night — a fan-favorite filled with games, prizes, and plenty of laughs.

Wednesday keeps the energy going with the classic Homecoming T-shirt toss from the Rogalski balcony — a tradition that always draws a crowd. That evening, fall athletes will gather in Christ the King Chapel for the Homecoming Blessing, a time to pause, reflect, and get ready for the weekend ahead.

Adding to the buzz this year are new photo displays in Rogalski, showing off moments from all areas of campus life — from sports and academics to everyday student experiences. The photos highlight what it really means to be an Ambrosian.

“I think from a marketing perspective the photos in the Rogalski Center are very welcoming and represent the school in a bunch of different aspects that SAU offers. I love how they are involving more photography to tell a story—how each student has their own success on campus. Obviously having myself on the wall was the best surprise ever and I had a good laugh. I’m very thankful,” said Senior Student Sydnee Horstman ’26.

But for many students, the highlight of the week is Friday night’s pep rally — a high-energy tradition that brings together students, athletes, and campus groups to celebrate and build excitement for the weekend.

This year’s pep rally will be held in Lee Lohman Arena at 7 p.m. on October 17th, featuring performances from the band, cheerleaders, and dance team, followed by the introduction of the fall sports teams.

“As a previous member of the dance team, the homecoming pep rally was always one of my favorites!” said Rachel Johnson, SAU Alumni ’23. “It was so fun to work together with the other dance and cheer teams to put together a really entertaining performance for everyone who attended to kick off a fun homecoming weekend!”

Her sister, Gia Johnson, Senior Student ’26, added, “Being part of all the Homecoming fun as a dancer was one of my favorite SAU memories! I loved seeing so many alumni back on campus cheering on current students!”

Saturday’s football game against Graceland University is the main event. Tailgating starts early at St. Vincent’s Center, giving students and alumni the chance to hang out and celebrate before the 1 p.m. kickoff.

“My favorite part about SAU Homecoming week is the different events going on, especially the free Iron Tee golf opportunity and being able to go with the guys! I also look forward to the weekend and tailgating with everyone,” said Senior Brian Hughes ’26.

Senior Andruw Jones ’26 agreed. “I think my favorite part about homecoming week is getting to interact with our St. Ambrose alumni family and I especially look forward to seeing all my friends that have graduated over the years.”

For Senior Kaylen Abrahamsen ’26, it’s all about the people. “My favorite part of homecoming is seeing the alumni. Our campus feels like one big family, and getting to reconnect with the members who’ve graduated and come back is truly something special.”

That feeling extends beyond campus, too. “Homecoming was always one of my favorite times at SAU,” said SAU Alumni ’25, Izzy Coss. “I really miss the energy on campus and getting to reconnect with everyone!”

Faculty and staff feel it just as much. “I think my favorite part of Homecoming is the sense of community that fills campus,” said Faculty Member and SAU Alumni, Bailey Winfree. “Alumni return for the weekend to reconnect and celebrate. Being an alum myself, I really enjoy getting to see friends, old classmates, mentors!”

And for some Bees, this will be their very first Homecoming. “I’m excited to see what the hype is all about,” said Freshman Student Anna Beetz ’29. “I’ve heard it’s the best week of the year and I can’t wait to experience it all.”

The celebrations also include Thursday night’s Celebration of Generosity, honoring SAU donors, and the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, recognizing standout athletes and coaches — including Drew Chuipek ’08 and John Darmody ’12.

And of course, the weekend wouldn’t be complete without a packed stadium on game day. “My favorite part of homecoming is seeing everyone’s friends and families coming together to pack the stands at the football game!” said SAU Alumni ’24, Sabrina Smulski. “It brings such a joyful and supportive energy. I truly do miss getting to be on the sidelines with my dance team — performing was one of my favorite and most fulfilling feelings, especially on homecoming!”

Later Saturday night, the Fall Homecoming Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Galvin Performing Arts Center, featuring performances from both current and alumni members of the SAU band and choir.

The week wraps up Sunday with Homecoming Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Christ the King Chapel — a final chance for the SAU community to reflect, reconnect, and close out the week together.

Homecoming isn’t just about the schedule. It’s about the spirit, the people, and the memories that come with it. With traditions old and new, and energy buzzing through every corner of campus, it’s easy to see why students call it the best week of the year.
