For some, the idea of putting on a pair of high heels and walking a mile might sound absurd.
In an annual tradition, the Sexual Assault Awareness Team (SAAT) asked the men of SAU to don a pair of heels and walk to raise awareness for sexual assault survivors.
Sarah Cullett, a co-executor of SAAT said, “It’s a fun way to get people thinking about the topic and talking about it. It’ll just be kind of a fun, lighthearted way to honor a serious matter.”
While students struggled or thrived in their new footwear, they recognized the importance of their walk.
Jeremiah Morris, an SAU junior, says, “If I can come out here, put on some heels, and walk around real quick just to show my support, of course I will.”
Hailey Cox, a member of SAAT, agrees. “I just like the solidarity it brings because I think that sometimes guys think it’s fun to dress up, and they don’t realize necessarily how much work it is to make yourself pretty or beautiful, so I think it’s a really good awareness event and solidarity between the genders.”
Cox also emphasizes that SAAT is active year-round, and is always available for the SAU community.
“We’re here for you; it’s a safe campus. If anyone ever needs anything, come to SAAT, we’re here for you guys.”
