The St. Ambrose campus bell tower.

At the heart of St. Ambrose University stands one of its most iconic and beloved landmarks, the Chapel bell tower. Built in 1952, the tower has long been a symbol of tradition, reflection, and community on campus. Recently, the Chapel tower has been undergoing careful brick restoration. While the work might not be immediately noticeable to passersby, it is an important part of preserving one of the most cherished landmarks on campus.

Kaylon Spengler from Physical Plant explained that this project continues maintenance efforts that began last summer. Over time, moisture had started to penetrate the original brickwork. Now, crews are cleaning and sealing the exterior to protect it from future damage and ensure the tower remains structurally sound for years to come.

Though subtle, this type of behind-the-scenes maintenance is vital to the long-term health of historic buildings. The Chapel has seen other updates throughout the years, including new stained glass, refinished floors, and lighting improvements, all aimed at preserving its beauty and functionality while honoring its legacy.

Tammy from Campus Ministry, whose office is in the Chapel basement, spoke about the building’s emotional and spiritual significance for students, faculty, and visitors. For many students, it is a place of reflection, celebration, and community.

Whether it is a wedding, welcome Mass, or a quiet moment between classes, the Chapel remains a steady presence at SAU. And thanks to careful restoration, its story, and its bells, will keep ringing for generations to come.
