The St. Ambrose University community came together this week for its first Out of the Darkness campus walk, raising awareness for suicide prevention while connecting students with vital mental health resources.

Held on Thursday, both students and community members gathered in an effort to promote open conversations around mental health. The university partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Iowa chapter to organize the walk and expand outreach efforts on campus.

“I was fortunate that St. Ambrose reached out to me in January wanting to plan it,” says event organizer Amara Huffine. “So overall the message is you’re not alone, here are the resources that are available, here are the direct resources that are in our campus and our community.”

Huffine emphasized that college students often face increased pressure during major life transitions, which can elevate the importance of awareness initiatives like this one. Events such as the campus walk aim to provide support, reduce stigma, and encourage students to seek help when needed.

“You guys are under and you’re in this huge transition of life,” says Huffine. “Sometimes your support systems aren’t there. So, it’s a really good way to bring suicide prevention and awareness to the campus”, she says.

The walk exceeded expectations, drawing more than 60 participants and raising over $4,000 for suicide prevention efforts. Due to its strong turnout and impact, organizers say plans are already underway to make the walk an annual event.

“My hope is, it was the first annual walk, and St. Ambrose seems super excited to do it again, so I think we are already planning for next year”, says Huffine.

For those in need of immediate mental health support, free and confidential help is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988. Students can also access resources through the St. Ambrose University Counseling Center.
